Equity Services Program

The Equity Services Program (ESP) Team advances a culture of accessibility, equity and human rights at McMaster University. We promote and support educational and community development initiatives that engage students, staff and faculty members.  Here’s a sampling of some of the areas of work that we are focused on:


Customized and By-Request Workshops 

    • ESP is pleased to meet with students, staff and faculty members in order to design and deliver customized workshops that meet your group’s needs and concerns.

Anti-Racism Programming 

    • The ESP is working with members of the McMaster and Hamilton community to research, design and deliver anti-racism programmes that address local issues and concerns.  Click here for information about upcoming events.

Positive Space Programming

    • The McMaster Positive Space Program is a university-wide initiative offered through the Office of Human Rights & Equity Services and is available to members of the campus community who are interested in creating welcoming spaces that are free of all oppressive behaviours including harassment and discrimination based on gender expression, gender identity, and sexual orientation. 
    • The Program provides a way for interested campus members to show their support for LGBTQ campus and community members by displaying a Positive Space tent-card or poster.
    • Displaying a Positive Space tent-card or poster indicates that you have completed the Positive Space Program and that you are committed to creating inclusive and respectful working, learning and living spaces for LGBTQ campus members.

H.E.A.R.T Certificate Program

    • H.E.A.R.T. stands for Human Rights, Equity, Accessibility, Respect Toolkit. The HEART Certificate Program consists of a series of 6 workshops offered to the campus community at pre-scheduled times.
    • Participants may attend 1 workshop or all 6. In order to receive a HEART Certificate, participants must complete a minimum of 3 workshops.
    • Workshops are free and open to all members of the McMaster community; however, registration is required.

Equity Consultations

    • ESP researches and shares “promising practices” related to accessibility, equity and human rights.
    • We are always excited to hear from campus members who are willing to share their “promising practices” with us so that we can pass along suggestions to other event organizers on campus.
    • if you have any issues or concerns related to equity or if you want to discuss how to make your campus event more accessible and inclusive.


Anti-Violence Network (AVN)

    • ESP works in close partnership with the Anti-Violence Network – a group of staff, students and faculty members who meet regularly to share concerns, offer support and coordinate efforts against all forms of violence on campus and beyond. 
    • The AVN works in partnership with the campus community to plan annual events including:  National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women (December 6); Mac Supports Take Back The Night; Black History Month; International Women’s Day.


Outreach and Partnership-Building 

ESP is involved in ongoing efforts to engage the campus community in dialogue and action related to diversity, inclusion, equity and accessibility.
