Featuring art by Black artists, focusing on spiritual themes of celebration, everyday life and Black culture. The 2nd floor hallway between the Spiritual Care and Learning Centre (MUSC 212) and the Chaplaincy Centre (MUSC 231) will be transformed into an art gallery showcasing paintings, sculptures, and photography, offering a captivating, immersive experience. This will be a 3-day-long showcase.

Black Latin America & Afro-Latinx Worlds: A Student Research & Creative Showcase is a student-curated BHM event highlighting undergraduate and graduate research and creative projects that engage Black Latin America, the Black Latin American Caribbean, and Afro-Latinx experiences. The event is curated by students currently enrolled in LATAM/ABLD 3A03: Critical Contemporary Issues in Latin American and Latinx Studies (Black Latin America: Belonging, Refusal, Resistance). Drawing from the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, the showcase features work that examine histories, cultures, artistic expression, political life, health, environment, and lived realities. The event creates a welcoming, community-centred space that foregrounds student voices and interdisciplinary ways of knowing.

This year marks 30 years since Canada formally recognized Black History Month. To honour this milestone, the Department of Family Medicine is hosting its 4th annual Black History Month Symposium, anchored on the theme “Rooted: Black legacy, strength and futures.” Experience the richness of Black culture through music, storytelling and poetry, while reflecting on the past and present experiences of Black people. Together, we will explore the impacts of anti-Black racism on health, wellbeing and access to opportunity, and strengthen our shared commitment to more equitable care, learning and working environments.

The presence of people of African descent in Hamilton predates its incorporation in 1846, yet the experiences, contributions, struggles, and imaginations often go unnoticed. As residents of Hamilton prepare to celebrate Black History Month, this 4 week virtual interactive public lecture will offer you an opportunity to delve into the specific experiences, contributions, struggles, and imaginations of Hamilton Black history, present, and future.
