Transgender Day of Remembrance

Dr. Rusan Lateef, Associate Director, Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office
Transgender Day of Remembrance – 20 November 2025
On Transgender Day of Remembrance, the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office (SVPRO), part of the Equity and Inclusion Office, stands in solidarity with trans and gender-diverse communities as we honour the lives taken as a result anti-transgender violence.
Research shows that transgender people around the world experience higher rates of violence than cisgender people (Evje et al., 2024; Flores et al., 2021; Jaffray, 2020) and this extends to campus sexual violence. A systematic review and meta-analysis on sexual assault prevalence among higher education students in 21 countries found a global prevalence of 18.1% for transgender and gender-diverse students, compared to 17.5% for cisgender women and 7.8% for cisgender men (Steele et al., 2024).
At SVPRO, we remain committed to providing inclusive survivor-centered and trauma-informed support to all students, faculty, and staff. We continue to encourage the university community to challenge attitudes and beliefs rooted in system of oppression, such as sexism and transphobia, that perpetuate, reinforce, and disregard violence against marginalized communities, such as trans and gender-diverse communities. Today, we honour trans lives, recognize the resilience of trans communities, and reaffirm our responsibility to help create a safer and more inclusive campus.
We welcome all trans and gender-diverse students to reach out to SVPRO if they have experienced gender-based or sexual violence and would like to receive support.
